J’s Analytical and Comprehensive Order for Buffy (Buffy Season 2)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 takes place 1997-1998. It consists mostly of the television show, and only a few comics. I added a few fun gamebooks that I was able to get ahold of, too.

I created this page because I wanted a simple reference that showed all the Buffy and Angel Episodes, along with all the comics, and maybe some of the books – and their nominal viewing/reading order.

TPB/ShowStory/ Episode TitleBuffy Season 2
B2Ep1: When She Was BadTimeframe: Fall 1997. First day back at school, fall semester. So, probably end of August / beginning of September.
B2Ep2:
Some Assembly Required
Timeframe: Fall 1997. Early in the high school football season. (And a Phish sticker sighting!)
B2Ep3: School Hard. Timeframe: Fall 1997. First appearance of Spike and Dru.
The Problem with VampiresTimeframe: 1997. Not long before School Hard.
TPB: Tales: Omnibus
Origin: Tales of the Vampires, part 1 Dark Horse (2003)
Notes: We see what Spike was talking about when he mentioned the problems they ran into in Prague right before coming to the Hellmouth. Though this story and the next take place right before School Hard, they should be read as flashbacks after we are introduced into Spike and Dru on the show.
Spike & Dru: Queen of HeartsTimeframe: 1997. Right before School Hard.
TPB: Buffy Omnibus v2
Origin: Spike & Dru: Queen of Hearts Dark Horse one shot (1999)
Notes: Spike and Dru are headed west to California to the Hellmouth. But first, a stop along the way in NOLA.
B2Ep4: Inca Mummy GirlTimeframe: Fall 1997.
B2Ep5: Reptile BoyTimeframe: October 1997.
Stake Your Destiny: Suicide KingTimeframe: October 21, 1997.
Gamebook: Suicide King (2005) by Robert Joseph Levy
Notes: The Buffy Stake Your Destiny books are interactive, much like Choose Your Own Adventure. Inclusion of a specific date makes it easier to place in this season!
B2Ep6: HalloweenTimeframe: October 31, 1997.
This may be my favorite episode of Season 2.
B2Ep7: Lie to MeTimeframe: November 1997.
B2Ep8: The Dark AgeTimeframe: November 1997. Not long after Halloween.
I love hearing about Giles’s past.
B2Ep9: What’s My Line (pt 1)Timeframe: Late 1997.
This two-parter are two of my favorite Season 2 episodes, after Halloween. I wish we could see more of Kendra.
B2Ep10: What’s My Line (pt 2)Timeframe: Late 1997.
This two-parter are two of my favorite Season 2 episodes, after Halloween. I wish we could see more of Kendra.
B2Ep11: TedTimeframe: Late 1997.
I do not enjoy this episode. The only redeeming things about it are Jenny and Giles. And John Ritter’s excellent acting chops.
Stake Your Destiny: ColonyTimeframe: End of 1997, between Ted and Bad Eggs.
Gamebook: Colony (2005) by Laura J. Burns and Melinda Metz.
Notes: The Buffy Stake Your Destiny books are interactive, much like Choose Your Own Adventure. I put this story after Ted, because of Giles and Jenny, but before Bad Eggs because of how Willow and Oz are vibing. (I find it interesting that in this book, you can tell where it is in Season 2 because of the 4 relationships of Buffy/Angel, Xander/Cordy, Giles/Jenny, and Willow/Oz; as opposed to Keep Me in Mind which uses direct references of many Buffy episodes.)
B2Ep12: Bad EggsTimeframe: January 1998. The Buffy chronology on Fandom puts this as the first ep set in 1998, probably because it was the first ep to air in 1998, but I’m goin’ with it.
Stake Your Destiny: Keep Me in MindTimeframe: January 1998, right after Bad Eggs.
Gamebook: Keep Me in Mind (2005) by Nancy Holder
Notes: The Buffy Stake Your Destiny books are interactive, much like Choose Your Own Adventure. It’s prior to the episode Surprise, but there are references to nearly every episode before this (including Bad Eggs). Also, Giles notes that Buffy I about to turn 17, and her birthday is January 19. (I find it interesting that in this book, you can tell where it is in Season 2 because of all of the specific references to Buffy episodes; as opposed to Colony which doesn’t refer to specific events, but does refer to many of the relationships among the Scoobies.)
B2Ep13: SurpriseTimeframe: January 19, 1998, Buffy’s 17th birthday.
B2Ep14: InnocenceTimeframe: January 19, 1998, Buffy’s 17th birthday.
B2Ep15: PhasesTimeframe: February 1998. The next full moon after Buffy’s birthday is in February.
B2Ep16: Bewitched, Bothered and BewilderedTimeframe: February 14, 1998.
B2Ep17: PassionTimeframe: February 1998. Soon after Valentine’s Day.
Ring of FireTimeframe: 1998, soon after Passion.
TPB: Buffy Omnibus v2
Origin: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ring of Fire Dark Horse (2000)
Notes: Takes place soon after the episode Passion; the wounds from that episode are still fresh.
B2Ep18: Killed by DeathTimeframe: Spring 1998.
Such a creepy episode. But I keep mixing it up with the next one because I think this episode is called what that one was named.
B2Ep19: I Only Have Eyes for YouTimeframe: Spring 1998.
B2Ep20: Go FishTimeframe: Spring 1998.
B2Ep21: Becoming (pt 1)Timeframe: Spring 1998. School is still in session.
B2Ep22: Becoming (pt 2) Timeframe: Spring 1998. School is still in session.
